Ivan’s Portfolio
7.) Date: May, 2025
Title of Work: Using Composition to Tell a Story
Medium: Charcoal and White Chalk on Toned Paper
Description: This project combined several stages. The first stage was to look carefully at how Renaissance painter Paolo Veronese put together abstract shapes to create his compositions. The second stage was to use a specific set of abstract shapes as a starting point for imagining a make believe pictorial scene, and for doing a line drawing of this imaginary scene. The third and last stage was to do a number of tonal sketches for this scene, and to select the tonal sketch that Ivan felt most strongly supported the line drawing. The result is a wonderfully poetic outdoor scene where the trees are dancing with one another, and a person is preparing to travel up a winding river.
